A U.S. Air Force general was killed when the F-16 fighter bomber he was flying crashed near the central Spanish town of Guadalajara Monday night, a Defense Ministry spokesman said. The dead man was identified as Maj. Gen. Winfield S. Harpe, 51, originally from Thomaston, Ga., commander of the 16th Air Force. His plane, based at Torrejon Air Base near Madrid, crashed about 8 miles from Guadalajara, the spokesman said. Harpe was flying alone in the plane, one of 72 F-16s based at Torrejon, the spokesman added. Harpe was a former assistant deputy chief of staff for personnel for the U.S. Air Force in Washington.
