HEADLINE: Plane Crashes on Edge of City, Former General Killed
DATELINE: GUATEMALA CITY
BODY:
A single-engine plane crashed on the eastern edge of the capital Monday, killing
all three people on board and injuring three on the ground, aviation officials
said.
Among those killed was the pilot, retired Gen. Luis Federico Fuentes Corado,
53, who was assistant defense minister in the mid-1970s.
It was not clear why the plane crashed. It headed back to Aurora International
Airport about 15 minutes after taking off for Puerto Barrios, on the Caribbean
coast, but crashed into a house under construction, said Julio Cesar Motta,
assistant civil aviation director.
Also killed were a photographer and an engineer. They planned to take aerial
photographs of ranches near Puerto Barrios, 185 miles northeast of Guatemala
City, according to the owner of an aerial photography company that chartered
the plane.
The three injured were construction workers at the house.
After serving as defense minister, Fuentes Corado was ambassador to El Salvador
and was director of the National Reconstruction Committee under military governments
in the early 1980s.
