HEADLINE: French General Killed In Fighter Crash

French Air Force Gen. Jacques Boichot, 49, commander of the 1st Tactical Air
Command, was killed Tuesday when his Jaguar fighter crashed in northern France,
the Defense Ministry announced.
The ministry said Boichot was flying with other aircraft when his jet crashed
for unknown reasons near Bapaume. Witnesses and local firemen said Boichot appeared
to have deliberately aimed the plane for fields between two villages.
Some witnesses said they saw an explosion on board the aircraft shortly before
it crashed. The cause of the crash was unknown.
Boichot took charge of the Tactical Air Command May 7, 1981. He held the Legion
of Honor and many other decorations, the ministry said.
Boichot was married with one child. He had been promoted to the rank of general
in December 1980.
